Delhi University Guest Faculty Beaten Up by Student Over Allegedly ‘Insensitive’ Comments on Pulwama Attack

A police complaint has been filed against the student by the guest faculty member.

In another incident of violence after the Pulwama attack, a student allegedly physically assaulted a guest faculty at the Law Faculty in University of Delhi. The student claimed that the professor commented “insensitively” on the slain CRPF soldiers who were killed in the suicide bombing.

According to a report by Mohammad Ibrar in the Times of India, Devendra Barala, a third-year student, received a show cause notice from the Joint Student-Teachers’ Consultative Committee on February 22. Further, the teacher who asked to remain anonymous reportedly filed a police complaint against the student. The dean, Ved Kumari, will constitute a committee to investigate further in the matter.

In a letter to the dean of the faculty and the Vice Chancellor of Delhi University, Barala claimed that on February 20, he tried to show a video to the teacher on the day of the attack to which he refused and maintained that it was propaganda material. “The professor said why feel so sad for those who are there to die,” alleged Barala.

Barala said that he was told to “not be emotional and that the army men are dying in northeastern states and Jharkhand as well.” Following this Barala took the teacher to the police station for his “anti-national” comments, but cops filed a case against him.

“I never said anything of the sort. He assaulted me and then dragged me to Maurice Nagar Police station. I managed to file an assault case against him,” the teacher told ToI, adding, that all that was said was to accept everything shared on social media as true. “You should not believe in whatever you see on social media as these are often fake or part of propaganda,” the teacher is quoted as saying. “I told him ‘it is a condemnable incident and there is no justification for terror,’” he said.
