Is Modi That Bad? A Viral Twitter Thread Rips Apart This Government’s Foreign Policy

PM Narendra Modi has clearly failed to build a strong relationship with other countries and today we are “irrelevant in our own neighbourhood”. The performance of the government is very disappointing in the foreign policy front.

2. Compare 2004-14, to 2014-18 in foreign policy.

In 2008 there was a crisis after Tibetan protests around the Olympics etc, incredibly serious, wound down quietly.

We had Doklam, lots of shouting, then in Wuhan, abject surrender. Public humiliation.

3. The slow careful policy, followed for two fucking decades by various governments vis-a-vis China was torpedoed when Doval, in his first meeting basically said, “Let’s forget all that. Let’s think ‘out of the box’., leaving the impression that old agreements were invalid.

4. Like Trump (and before Trump), it made it look like India could not be trusted to abide by agreements.

Then, of course, there is Umreeka. The “Barack” love, the “May the farce be with you” nautanki, the choice of Jaishanker as FS, because Umreeka was everything.

6. Silicon Valley was way more important to our social media loving loudspeaker than Kathmandu Valley, and then Jaishanker was sent to berate the Nepali leadership.

That turned out really well, no?

7. He drops in to Pakistan to hug Nawaz Sharif, and what was that about? After Udhampur, Doval becomes the first NSA to give a private tour to the bloody ISI of a military base. Wow, just wow. What was achieved?

8. Sri Lanka might be our only “success”, and given how moth-eaten a success it is, should we be proud?

I may not have agreed with India’s decision to berate Sri Lanka’s on human rights abuses in the UN, but we could, after the latest UN report on Kashmir, we can’t even do that.

9. Even Maldives thumbs its nose at us.

In 2004-14, we easily saw off crises with the EU (the Italian soldiers shooting fishermen – by the way, they’ve been released by this government), with the US (on treatment of diplomatic staff), with China, near-war with Pakistan.
