‘Cops Forced Me To File A Rape Case Against My Muslim Friend,’ Says Woman Harassed In Meerut
“They told me that they would let me walk free only if I listened to them,” she said.
Meerut: A video showing four cops brutally thrashing a 20-year-old woman in a police van was widely shared on social media on Wednesday. The cops reportedly thrashed the girl for “choosing a Muslim partner”.
Speaking to The Times of India on Thursday, the woman claimed that the cops forced her to file a complaint against her Muslim friend. “While I was waiting at the police station for my family to arrive, cops forced me to file a rape case against my friend. They told me that they would let me walk free only if I listened to them. Later, the policemen gave the same advice to my family.”
Similarly, the woman’s mother said, “They said you please file a case against him. But we refused and took our daughter home.”
The nursing student was studying with her friend in a room when some members of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) barged in the rented house and took her male friend in a different room. “They then started beating us. Some of them kept asking me if I am a Hindu or a Muslim and demanded identity proofs,” she said.
The woman stated that VHP workers kept beating her friend because he was a Muslim. They repeatedly asked her “Do you want to marry him?”
“I tried to explain the situation to a lady constable but she refused to listen to me. You can see in the video how they misbehaved with me,” the woman told India Today.
The two women constables, one head constable and one home guard who were caught on camera beating the 20-year-old have now been suspended.
