Chhattisgarh: No Loan Waiver Forces Another Farmer To Commit Suicide

BJP has come under scrutiny in many states for the rising number of farmers’ suicides in the states where it is ruling.

A debt-ridden farmer allegedly committed suicide in Chhattisgarh’s Pendra, Kudri in Bilaspur district on Thursday, ANI reported.

Suresh Singh Marwahi committed suicide at his in-law’s house. He was the father of four daughters and owner of 12 acres of agricultural land, a Dainik Bhaskar report said.

Marwahi had taken a loan of Rs 1.20 lakh from the Farmer Service Co-operative Larkeyi Committee. This loan increased to 1.70 lakh in four years.

Unable to pay the loan, he was upset as rain was scarce for the past four years because of which his earning was poor. This year also he couldn’t grow any crop in his farm, said the Bhaskar report.

According to a PTI report, 61 farmers killed themselves in Chhattisgarh between April to November 2017.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has come under scrutiny in many states for the rising number of farmers’ suicides in the states where it is ruling.

There is also a 10-day farmers’ agitation on-going in many states including Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
