Assam: 47-Year-Old Man Lynched By Mob in Karimganj, Two Arrested

Forty-seven-year-old Abdul Mateen was reportedly lynched by a mob in Karimganj district, Assam on Friday, January 18 on suspicion of theft. He succumbed to his injuries a day later at Silchar Medical College.
According to local daily Samayik Prasanga, Mateen was attacked in Malakar Para area in Suprakandi, Fakirabazar. The angry mob alleged that he had stolen an iron gate from Fakira Bazar Balika Vidyalaya. The mob then thrashed Mateen brutally and his ears and head were bleeding when local police reached the spot.
The police rushed Mateen to Karimganj Civil Hospital where the doctors referred him to the Silchar Medical College. When his dead body was brought to his village Sarong Deopur in North Karimganj, villagers, including his relatives protested on National Highway 37 and asked the police to immediately arrest the culprits. They also demanded compensation for his family and a government job for his nearest kin.
A case was registered in Karimganj Sadar Police Station. The police have arrested Swapan Chanda (40) and Kajal Malakar (42), while other culprits have fled, the report added.
