Haven’t Seen Such Agrarian Distress Since Independence, Modi Govt Is Anti-farmer: Yechury

Farmers marching as part of the ‘Kisan Kranti Padyatra’ are being prevented by the police from entering Delhi.

After thousands of protesting farmers were stopped from entering Delhi, Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Sitaram Yechury called the Narendra Modi government ‘anti-farmer’ for exasperating the farmers’ crisis.

Yechury told ANI, “Instead of providing relief to farmers they are exasperating the crisis further forcing farmers to be under debt burden & distress suicides.”

The farmers are marching under the banner of Bharatiya Kisan Union, as part of the ‘Kisan Kranti Padyatra’. Reportedly, the police is using water cannons and teargas against the protesting farmers to keep them from entering Delhi.
“Why have we been stopped here (at UP-Delhi border)? The rally was proceeding in a disciplined manner. If we don’t tell our government about our problems then whom do we tell? Do we go to Pakistan or Bangladesh?” Naresh Tikait, Bharatiya Kisan Union president, told ANI.
